18/44

Based on the novel by Etienne Leroux
Directed by Hein Devos
Script by Vicky Davis

Synopsis:

18/44 follows the life and confessions of a 44-year old popular novelist who, in the midst of a mid-life crisis, starts an unlikely relationship with an 18-year old admirer, whom he never meets.

In his email correspondences with the girl, the narrator reconstructs his life and explores his relationships with four formidable women who have shared it with him:
* His equivocal, aristocratic aunt immured in the violet twilight of the 1960’s, when he himself was 18 and still learning about life and love.
* His six-foot tall, deaf, crippled and manically depressed, ex-beauty queen wife.
* His passionate Russian mistress who has a politically charged past.
* And, of course, the elusive, unknown young correspondent - his muse, only known as Miss X.

18/44 is a telescoping of dates and ages, memories and desires, into a rich mixture of fiction, history, and high satire. Though loneliness and disillusionment, betrayal and mounting terror are the cornerstones of the narrator’s confession, the film itself becomes a delightfully humorous and deeply moving alchemic journey of spiritual renewal - a story of shattering self-analysis with meanings that reverberate long after the final credit has rolled.
